Association Statement on Cancellation of State Tournament

The KSWA apologizes that the State Tournament was cancelled.  I understand that many people are upset with the decision, but we were left with no other alternative.   People may choose to believe this or not.

We were officially notified around 12:30pm Friday that Central Hardin HS would not allow us to use their facility due to the forecasted weather conditions.

Our initial attempts to speak to school officials to plead our case were rejected.  At that point we began to seek other venues in the surrounding areas.  We also started communications with the Hardin County superintendent’s office.  We argued that as a USAW sanctioned event, all liabilities would be covered by our insurance.  After more discussion, there was still no guarantee that we would be able to hold the event on Saturday.

All other sites that we contacted to use as an alternate location were unable to host.  Many for the same reasons as CHHS.  Other sites simply said that it could not be done is such short notice.

For those that claim that the Association should have had a back-up plan in light of the possible weather, our response is this: This is the first time that the event has ever been cancelled in the seven year history of the Association.  With as much planning that is involved in an event such as this, it is impossible to plan for bad weather.   I would hope that any reasonable person knows this.   Anyone that has ever held an event of this size and importance knows that you cannot just pick-up and move sites.  Even then, we still have to deal with the same weather concerns.

The Association will explore other options for host sites for future events.  Coaches are strongly encouraged to attend our two yearly meetings in September and May to voice their opinions and to help in the decision making process on all Association policies.

Our focus now is to look at our options for rescheduling the event.  We will be in contact with coaches as soon as possible with possible solutions.  Several factors will need to be taken into account and we want to ensure that coaches are able to help us make an informed choice.

Most athletes spend the initial years when they are learning a sport by concentrating their effort on techniques, bodybuilding and fitness. However, the winning edge of an athlete actually comes from mental skills that complement physical expertise. The mind plays a big role in your attitude and approach to a game. Your game preparation is incomplete if your emphasis remains totally on the physical aspects of the sport...
